tip one Do not mow too short, approximately 2 ½” tall. The height slows down moisture evaporation. The height also helps hide bare spots. tip two Fertilizing-Too often fertilizing is associated with mowing more. As your grass grows, it takes nutrients from the soil. These nutrients need to be replaced. I recommend fertilizing in the fall. An easy way to remember is between Thanksgiving and Christmas. This method gives the product all winter to make it to the roots. Fall fertilizing will give you healthy roots and long lasting grass. Spring fertilizing does give you a darker green lawn. However, it causes more mowing than fall fertilizing, and if done too late in the spring, it can harm the grass if not combined with regular watering. If you choose to fertilize in the spring, I recommend 12-12-12 or 13-13-13. The same in fall or possibly a product with more nitrogen (1st number). Be careful and follow the label directions. More is NOT better. Know your square footage (length x width). tip three Weed killers-Contact a licensed applicator. I recommend making sure you have your grass in healthy shape before you start a weed program. tip four Reseed in the early fall, then start your weed program the following spring. If you do take on your own weed program, follow the label. Again, more is not better. Too much weed killer can also kill the grass if applied at too heavy of a rate. |
